Riding your Sea-Doo on the water is akin to riding your Can-Am Spyder Roadster on a long winding road. The rush of the wind is exhilarating, but also can make visibility difficult. Our recommendation for a solution is ensuring you have the proper eyewear.  The proper eyewear will both ensure you, and your passengers, safety as well as protect your eyes from the water, wind and sun.  Goggles or sunglasses will help you maintain a clear view at all times.

Impeller? Ergolock? Sponsons?  The personal watercraft industry speaks its own language and here at Sea-Doo we also speak our own language.  We have distilled some of the most common acronyms and words related to Sea-Doo watercraft so the next time you are wondering, “just what is Sport Mode” you can easily find an answer.

A.E.S.: Adjustable Ergonomic Steering

Adjustable Rear Sponsons:  An efficient design that improves lateral stability. 3-position adjustable for skill level and riding environment: higher for a more playful freeride experience or lower for more aggressive turning. Winglet feature enhances lean angles during turning.

aS – Adjustable Suspension: Suspension that utilizes a superior grade high-performance shock made by FOX with full preload and compression manual adjustability.

Closed Loop Cooling System (CLCS): Uses coolant to keep a Sea-Doo’s engine running at the ideal temperature, much like a car’s radiator. The CLCS also keeps out corrosive saltwater and debris.

D.E.S.S. Digitally Encoded Security System: The Industry’s first digitally encoded theft-deterrent system. This system prevents unauthorized use. Sea-Doo’s are embedded with a unique microchip that is engaged with the rider’s lanyard. This feature was singled out by the National Insurance Crime Bureau as one of the best theft deterrents available on a personal watercraft.[1]

D-Sea-Bel System: This system combines a series of resonators and vibration absorbing components to make Sea-Doo watercraft some of the quietest on the water.

ECO mode: The iTC function that automatically determines the most economical power delivery and sets the optimal RPM for greatest fuel economy.

Ergolock System: A combination of ergonomic features that allow amazing control while cornering with less upper body fatigue. It features a narrow racing seat with knee grab design, adjustable handlebars and angled footwells that allow riders to “lock” in when cornering hard. This results in faster turns and more time on the water.

High Performance VTS (Variable Trim System): Provides pre-set positions for quick settings VTS (Variable Trim System) when adjusting boat trim, maximizes acceleration and high-speed stability.

iBR – Intelligent Brake and Reverse: The world’s only on-water braking system. The iBR system lets riders stop up to 100 feet sooner than any other watercraft[2]. All with the squeeze of a lever. And with its electronic reverse, it gives riders a level of maneuverability that makes docking easier. Click here to view a video on Sea-Doo iBR.

iControl: The “Brain’’ that integrates and controls all systems to create the best possible ride. iControl includes iBR, iTC and S³.

iControl Learning Key: The programmable Learning Key allows riders to limit the performance of the PWC based on skill-level.

iS: Intelligent Suspension. 6 inches of adjustable suspension that automatically adapt to isolate the rider from the impact of rough water.

Impeller: A rotating component of a centrifugal pump, usually made of iron, steel, bronze, brass, aluminum or plastic, that transfers energy from the motor.

iTC – Intelligent Throttle Control: Sea-Doo’s intuitive Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) technology. Sea-Doo watercraft are the only watercraft to start in neutral, so the engine runs without propelling the craft forward – giving riders safer dockside starts and easy, stress-free maneuverability. The throttle responds to an electronic signal instead of a cable. This allows more precise engine calibration, resulting in better fuel economy and a lower operating cost. It also features an activity-specific cruise control, Touring/Sport mode and ECO™ mode that can all be set to accommodate riding styles.

Naturally Aspirated: The Sea-Doo air intake, like in a car, draws air into the engine that is then mixed with fuel to power the watercraft. In a Naturally Aspirated engine the engine breaths naturally without forced induction.

PWC: Personal Watercraft. A PWC is a recreational watercraft that the rider sits on, or stands on, rather than riding inside of a boat.  PWCs have an inboard engine fueled by a  jet pump with an impeller to create thrust for propulsion and steering.  Most are designed for two or three people. The United States Coast Guard defines a personal watercraft as a jet drive boat less than 13’ feet in length.

ROTAX 4-TEC Engine:  Each Sea-Doo watercraft comes equipped with a legendary Rotax 4-TEC engine specifically designed for marine use. Not only do riders get quicker acceleration and a higher top speed, Rotax engines also works hand in hand with iTC to provide more precise engine calibration. What this means is better fuel economy.

S3 hull: Stepped, stable & strong. Our S³ Hull is the first and only one of its kind. Its stepped design reduces drag while staying glued to the water for a stable and consistent ride. The material of the S³ Hull is up to 20% lighter than competitors *[3], yet the hull remains incredibly strong, due to its ribbed construction. This means better handling and fuel efficiency.

Seadooing: Riding a Sea-Doo on the water.

Speed Based Ski Mode: This advanced iControl feature allows the driver to adjust the intensity of the launch for different rider skill levels and tow sports while maintaining a constant speed. There are 5 acceleration profiles for the best possible tow sports experience.

Sponsons: Projections from the sides of the watercraft for buoyancy and stability to increase floatation and lift when underway

Supercharged: Extra power. The engine artificially force feeds air into the engine increasing performance.

Suspension (S): Adjustable Suspension: 5.5 inches (12.7 cm) of suspension manually adjustable with a regular wrench. Gives riders a smooth ride in all water conditions.

T3 Hull: Innovative multi-staged design with extreme hard and soft chines. Allows for more precise cornering, enhances lean-in, cuts water and tracks better; extremely responsive.

Touring or Sport mode: Offers a choice between two throttle responses for different riding styles. Touring mode is the default setting offering a more progressive acceleration curve for a more confident ride – ideal for cruising and 2-up riding. Sport mode can be easily activated using the Sport button. It provides all acceleration performance for a more aggressive throttle response.

Touring Seat: Plush, ergonomic design provides maximum comfort and support for the rider and passenger.

Trim Tabs: Limit bow rise and improve parallelism to water. Also increase tracking in rough water conditions.

Tubing: The act of pulling an inflatable tube behind a personal watercraft or boat across a body of water.

Wake:  (Nautical Term) The waves or track left by a vessel or other object moving through water. Wake Boarders and Wake Skaters have made a sport out of riding the wake.

Wake Boarding:  A surface watersport, which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing.  A wake board is buoyant and traditionally constructed of foam or honeycomb mixed with resin and coated with fiberglass. The rider is attached to the wake board with adjustable bindings. The rider is towed behind a motorized vehicle such as a Sea-Doo watercraft, a boat, winches or a closed-course cable system.

Wake Skating: An adaptation of wakeboarding that uses a similar board design but the rider is not bound to the board in any way. The board is constructed of wood or fiberglass and covered with grip tape or a soft, high-traction foam, usually referred to as EVA foam. Here is a link to our instructional WAKE series on YouTube.

Waterskiing: A sport in which a person is typically pulled behind a personal watercraft, boat or cable over a body of water.

Dr. Doo: Tips for Pre-Season Preparation of your Sea-Doo Watercraft

Spring is in the air.  The flowers are beginning to bloom, the water is warming up and it is just about time to get your Sea-Doo back out on the water.  As you get prepared for that first ride, there are a few things you can do to your Sea-Doo personal watercraft to ensure optimum performance on the water.

If you winterized your watercraft you should be able to quickly get out on the water with minimal preparation. If you live in a warmer climate, or did not fully winterize your watercraft, we recommend following these steps before hitting the water.

  1. XPS 4-stroke maintenance and oil change kit (This kit includes XPS oil, oil filter, three NGK spark plugs and instruction sheet) Part number: 295501075

Instructions

•Inspect all fuel and water lines for cracks or damage. Replace or visit your local Sea-Doo dealer to have replaced.

•Check all electrical connections for damage or build up. Repair or clean before starting watercraft for the first time.

•If you did not change the oil and oil filter before winterizing, be sure to change it during the de-winterizing process.

•Check and change your spark plugs if necessary. There is the possibility they developed residue or moisture over the winter.

•Make sure your battery has been properly charged and reinstall the battery into  your Sea-Doo watercraft.

•Check all controls (steering, steering cable, throttle, throttle cable and iBR, lever) for proper movement to ensure they don’t stick. Lubricate any of these controls if they do not move freely.

•Connect your Sea-Doo watercraft up to the hose, start the engine and run for no longer then two minutes, this will ensure everything is running properly.

•Also it is never a bad thing to clean and detail your Sea-Doo watercraft before the season.  This steps helps to prevent sun damage and contaminates in the water while also providing that show room sparkle all season long.

BRP continues to lead the watercraft industry in racing success and support with the 2013 Sea-Doo RXP-X and RXT-X models, Sea-Doo X-TEAM ‘BIG BUCKS’ Bounty racer contingency program, and Sea-Doo Promoter support program.

BRP enters the 2013 watercraft racing season with immense momentum following one of the most dominant IJSBA World Finals performances in history. Sea-Doo watercraft racers claimed 16 of the available 21 titles and filled 47 of the 63 available podium positions led by X-TEAM rider James Bushell. Bushell has claimed four PRO Runabout titles in two years aboard his 158 Performance Sea-Doo RXP-X.

Bushell and other RXP-X riders will have the opportunity to claim more money for top finishers in 2013 with an inflated Sea-Doo X-TEAM Bounty racer contingency program, the only program of its kind.

The 2013 Sea-Doo X-TEAM ‘BIG BUCKS’ Bounty program will offer larger payouts for wins and championships, raising the incentive to finish on the podium at IJSBA sanctioned events in the United States and Canada. BRP’s Sea-Doo X-TEAM Bounty is open to all racers competing on modern Sea-Doo models in designated Novice, Expert, and Pro classes. The Sea-Doo contingency is essentially an, “open-sponsorship” that excludes no one, except those competing on watercraft other than Sea-Doo.

The Sea-Doo Promoter Support program provides event promoters sponsorship to help them produce more, high-quality, fun events. BRP works with the promoters to ensure Sea-Doo owners have a place to ride and compete in an organized manner, providing another fun aspect of owning a Sea-Doo watercraft.

“BRP is dedicated to supporting the sport of watercraft racing and giving the high-performance Sea-Doo watercraft owner a place, with incentives, to enjoy their Sea-Doo in a competitive atmosphere,” says Adrien De Alexandris, Brand Manager of Sea-Doo watercraft. “Watercraft racing is a great family sport and supporting this community compliments our efforts in producing the industry’s best high-performance watercraft in the Sea-Doo RXP-X, RXT-X, and GTR 215 models.”

2013 SEA-DOO X-TEAM BOUNTY Eligibility Rules: 

READ ALL APPLICABLE RULES BELOW TO QUALIFY

1. To be eligible for the Sea-Doo X-TEAM Bounty contingency, racer must compete on an IJSBA eligible Sea-Doo watercraft in the specified class(es) described in the rules and contingency tables within the United States or Canada. Race events offering the Sea-Doo X-TEAM Bounty are all those in North America sanctioned by either the IJSBA.

2.  ONLY racers competing on 4-TEC powered Sea-Doo watercraft qualify.

3.  Racer must list “SEA-DOO” as the brand of watercraft raced and “SEA‑DOO X TEAM” as a sponsor on all entries.

4.  The SEA-DOO X-TEAM BOUNTY logo decal must be clearly visible and legible on watercraft forward of the handlebars and above the waterline.  Sea-Doo LOGO decals must be clearly visible on both sides of the watercraft on the hull gunnel – minimum of two (2”) inch tall lettering. Sea-Doo Bounty logo decal supplied by promoter or write to tim@look-marketing.com

5.  Racer is eligible for as many contingency payments as earned during an event.

6.  Racer MUST compete against a MINIMUM OF FIVE (5) finalists in the class to qualify for contingency.

7.  Contingency prizes will be paid for overall closed-course racing only. Slalom does not apply. In IJSBA World Finals contingency, only Overall Titles will be paid (which in some cases may include slalom).

8.  For the 2013 race season, all claims must be sent in by the racer, within 10 days of the event, and postmarked no later than July 10, 2013 (for races taking place between February 22, 2013-July 7, 2013) September 10, 2013 (for races between July 12, 2013 – September 1, 2013) and October 20, 2013 (for the World Finals).  Claims postmarked after these dates will not be honored.

9.  Contingency payments will be issued to racers from BRP only after the IJSBA and BRP have verified official results.

10.  All claims must be signed by an event or sanctioning body official, if not, payment will not be made.  Racers have the responsibility to have the claim properly completed (providing all requested information) and mailed to the address above.  Please allow 5-10 weeks for processing of checks after the July 10, 2013, September 1, 2013, and October 20, 2013 cut-off dates.

11.  Racer MUST provide a signed W-9 Tax form and supply images of the Sea-Doo watercraft raced WITH FIRST redemption submission, before any payments will be made by BRP.

12.  BRP reserves the right to reject a claim not properly or fraudulently filed and reserves the right to cancel this program at any time.

13.  BRP will NOT accept ANY responsibility for any DAMAGES or INJURIES, including DEATH that may occur during the above-described events.

14.  Racers grant BRP the unlimited rights to utilize their name, their photograph, their person, and their performance in advertising and promotional efforts.

The Perfect Sea-Doo Valentines Day or Date

Escaping the tug of reality for a few hours on the water is the perfect Valentines Day or Valentines date.  Have you watched the movie ‘Hitch’? Will Smith’s character invites Eva Mendes on a first date where the couple rides two personal watercraft around the Statue of Liberty. Memorable to say the least. The lure of the water, sunshine and the ability to disconnect from our electronic shackles of e-mail and cell phones can make for a great day.

Our favorite East coast get-away is to launch in Cocoa Beach, Florida early in the morning and cruise down the Banana and Indian Rivers on Florida’s East Coast to Sebastian Inlet aboard GTI models or non-suspended GTX models.  It is about a one-hour cruise where couples can leave somewhat of an urban setting and explore nature seeing dolphins, egrets, and sometimes a stray flamingo.  The Inlet provides access to the ocean, blue water, and sandbars to visit for a relaxing hand-in-hand stroll while looking for hermit crabs.

After relaxing at the inlet, couples can ride to the western shore in Sebastian to the popular waterfront Captain Hiram’s on Sebastian Riverfront. Captain Hiram’s has coined themselves “Bahamas USA” and have replicated that laid back atmosphere with Caribbean inspired cuisine. After an afternoon swinging in hammocks, the sunset ride back to the North caps a great day on the water.

West coast couples can experience a more adventurous ride by leaving Long Beach Harbor, in California,  and making a 26-mile trip to outlying Catalina Island and the town of Avalon. The Sea-Doo GTX or RXT line would be the preferred vehicle of choice for this open water rendezvous, smoothing out the Pacific swells. Avalon offers the perfect destination for a lunch trip or overnight experience with multiple restaurants and hotels all in close walking distance from the harbor.

 

Sea-Doo, the perfect Valentines date vehicle: sunshine, hours of fun on the water and the opportunity to hug your Valentine when holding on tight!

Jared Moore is fast.  So fast he doesn’t know how fast he is most of the time.  Moore lives in South Africa where a few fast personal watercraft racers hail from, notedly Dustin Motzouris, but Moore must travel more than a good distance to draw competition that compares to his talents. Last October, Moore showed that speed, placing second in the IJSBA World Finals premier event the Pro Open behind James Bushell; both aboard Sea-Doo RXP-X models.

Moore is your everyday, hard working guy, your everyday motorhead guy. As competitive as anyone you will meet but with a laid back southern hemisphere charm.

Let’s meet Sea-Doo X-TEAM racer, Jared Moore.

 

OnBoard – Jared, where did you grow up and how was your competitive spirit developed?

 Moore –I grew up on a small farm just outside Benoni which is not too far from Johannesburg in South Africa. Growing up on farm gave me a lot of space for fun and making trouble with a lot of toys to play on like 4-wheeler motorbikes, pit bikes, and anything that would move which could be ridden hard, rebuilt and ridden hard again.

 

 

OnBoard -What do you do away from the water to stay on the water? What’s your profession?

Moore – I work for my father’s company, we rebuild trucks which have been in accidents and we have a few trucks that transport cars. So some days I’m a mechanic and the other days I’m a truck driver.

 

OnBoard – Jared, How were you introduced to watersports?

Moore – My father and some of my uncles all raced some form of boats, so I was around water sports growing up. I raced 15 to 25 hp boats from the age of 10 and started racing personal watercraft when I was 14 years old. When I was 15, I started racing F1 boats in South Africa while still racing Sea-Doos. When I turned 17 I stared to focus mainly on racing Sea-Doo watercraft.

 

 

OnBoard – Since you began competing what are some of your accolades?

Moore – I won the Expert Runabout Limited 1200cc class in 2003 and 2005 at the IJSBA World Finals in Lake Havasu City AZ, USA before moving to the Pro Class in 2007. In 2011 I got a 3rd at the TJSBA Kings Cup in Thailand and the best I’ve done was 2nd in the Pro Open class last year at World Finals in Havasu on the new RXPX.

 

 OnBoard – Jared, Where is your favorite PWC race site?

Moore – I love the challenging racing at the World Finals in Lake Havasu but my favorite place to race will have to be in Pattaya City, Thailand at the King’s Cup. With white sand, blue water, the scooters and some of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. The racing is hard with four long moto’s and you never know what’s going to happen next.

 

OnBoard – What is it about PWC racing that keeps you coming back?

Moore – The bug bit me a long time ago and I love the sport. The skis are so fast now and just work so well in any conditions. When you go to the start line you never know what’s going to happen, and wanting to be the best is the thing that keeps me coming back for more.

 

OnBoard – Jared, where is your favorite non-racing, riding location?

Moore-Dustin Motz lives on the coast, about 6 hours drive for me. There is a small closed spot in the harbor where he has set up a track and we go there and train. It’s always warm there, even in winter when we train for World Finals. It’s so much fun when the wind blows and the water gets rough and we ride until we can’t walk.

 

OnBoard – How was your experiences travelling to the IJSBA World Finals? And who is helping your racing efforts (sponsors)

Moore – Going to the World Finals is a long trip for us, far from home. It’s easy to get off work to travel to the race when you work for your main sponsor (TM Trucking), my father’s company. We get a lot of help from Dustin Motz at Fast Powersport and we could not have done it without the team at Sea-Doo Centre, they really are the best and it shows with Sea-Doo Centre built Skis finishing 1-2-3 in the Pro Open Class at World Finals and the top 5 at the Kings Cup. But for the most part, my racing is self funded.

 

OnBoard – What are you racing right now and what are looking forward to?

Moore –I’m racing a Sea-Doo Centre modified 2012 RXPX , this is the best ski I’ve ever had, it goes where I want it to and has more than enough power to get me there. We working on a few new things to keep us up there but will be using the same ski to help us get to number 1.

Celebrated for continued innovation and value, BRP Sea-Doo dominates the industry in National Marine Manufacturer Association (NMMA) Awards by winning five awards in the past four years.  This legacy of awards has fostered BRP’s leadership in developing the next generation of personal watercraft.

This week marks the biggest show in the marine industry, the Miami International Boat Show, the largest of its kind in the world. One of the show highlights is the NMMA Innovation Awards that acknowledge manufacturers who bring to market new and innovative products that advance the boating industry and honor them for integrating new concepts that provide practicality to the consumer in a cost effective manner. Winners are selected by a panel of judges consisting of members of Boating Writers International and the awards are announced each year at the show on South Beach.

BRP Sea-Doo has led the PWC, Jet Boats and Pontoon category as well as an award in the Water Sports and Equipment category.

2012 RXP-X 260:  NMMA Innovation Award in the PWC, Jet Boats, and Pontoon Boat category

“BRP’s Sea-Doo Ergolock seat, angled footwells, and T3 hull combine to create a PWC with incredible turning ability and maximum comfort designed to build confidence in its rider. It made me an instant expert,” said NMMA Innovation Award judge Alan Jones.

The Sea-Doo RXP-X 260 watercraft redefined the musclecraft segment with an ominous visual appeal from its flowing facet design, ram air intakes, large side grills and distinctive new Ergolock system and tight-turning T3 hull. BRP’s Ergolock system includes angled footwell wedges and a gradually narrowing seat design to help better connect the rider to the watercraft. It reduces upper body fatigue by allowing the rider to ride faster, for longer periods of time. BRP’s Ergolock system complements the tight turning aspect of the T3 hull that features an innovative dual surface design that responds differently at high or low speeds. The new T3 hull shape combines soft and hard chines and adjustable sponsons with winglets and trim tabs that allow the watercraft to lean into corners, better maintaining entry and exit speeds after turns.

“The 2011 Sea-Doo GTI 130 PWC is a comprehensive package of features for the value-minded rider,” NMMA Innovation Award Judge Robert Buller noted. “With its new ergonomically designed deck, the efficient ECO mode, throttle control and braking system, this is a smart package for under $9,000*.”

In 2011, BRP’s Sea-Doo GTI SE 130 watercraft was completely redesigned with an intense focus on improving rider ergonomics and comfort while integrating the exclusive iBR system. BRP’s iBR provides riders with a level of control never before experienced on the water with simplified maneuverability and the peace of mind knowing that riders can stop when wanted. The Sea-Doo GTI SE 130 model is also equipped with intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) that allows the rider to electronically control how power is delivered through various modes including ECO mode†.

BRP’s Advanced TEC iCatch PWC trailer also impressed the panel of judges. The NMMA noted that 95% of registered boats in the United States are towed to the water and NMMA Innovation Award judge Alan Jones said: “The BRP Advanced TEC iCatch PWC trailer makes launching and retrieving faster, easier and safer.”

BRP’s Advanced TEC iCatch PWC trailer simplifies the launch and load process. The torsion axle design of the trailer lowers the cradle point of the PWC providing better highway handling and ability to launch and load the PWC in shallower water.  The wrap around walk pad allows riders to mount and dismount the PWC clear of slippery launch ramps and further simplifying the launch/load procedure is the iCatch release lever, located on the walk pad that can be pulled while seated aboard the PWC. The roller bunk design centers the PWC when loading and the iCatch system automatically hooks the bow securing the PWC on the trailer.

Judge Alan Jones, after riding it through a three-foot chop says, ‘It’s good enough to make an average rider like me, feel like a pro and it allowed me to get out of bed the next day without a backache.'”

Albert Martin of Martin’s Custom Structures in Gloucester, Virginia, called me up several months ago and said he wanted to thank me. Confused, I said “For what?” Apparently, someone overseas had been looking at my website and told Albert that they wanted three fishing-rigged personal watercraft “like Brian’s.” They knew that they wanted to have the latest Sea-Doos, but other than that, they told Albert to do anything and everything he could think of. As you can tell did not let them down.

Picking The Right Machines

Although the client wanted a ski “just like Brian’s” these Sea-Doos are significantly more heavily outfitted than my own. These have everything Albert could’ve imagined including a full array of above and underwater lighting, custom GPS/sounder systems, canvas canopies, axillary fuel tanks, live bait tanks and coolers.

With his marching orders in hand, Albert went to Brian Barringer of Cycle City Corp in Newport News, Va. After looking over the available Sea-Doos, he purchased a trio of matching Sea-Doo RXT 260 iS.

The yellow-and-black triplets featured Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Suspension (iS) system, the industry’s only PWC fully-suspended top deck. Figuring that these machines would see plenty of offshore riding, the articulated coil-over suspension would come in hand.

Additionally, the units feature Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR), the only functioning braking system on a PWC.

A custom-fabricated, foam-filled extra capacity fuel tank allows for the private owners of these new machines to travel further than their factory tanks would allow. Extra cooler storage compensates for the lost watertight storage in the bow. Even with the forward towers, the front hatches open without conflict.

The Breakdown

The Buildup

Each of the three Sea-Doos carry the same Garmin GPS/depth sounding equipment, switch panels and controls. All towers have windshields and canvas roofs as well as integrated pole holders in a myriad of positions.

The extensive aluminum pipework with multiple rod holders is like a work of art, I am always in awe of the perfect welds that Albert and his son Chad create. Templates were created from one and used as the pattern to build the following two units.

I stopped by this shop when they were completed and to take a look before they were to be shipped overseas.

I am glad that other people from all over are taking interest in Jet Ski Fishing. It is something I thoroughly enjoy and I encourage others to try.

With everything poured into these custom machines, truly these three of kind watercraft are one of a kind!
