In 2011, Sea-Doo’s Ultimate Fan, Kevin Wassum, and his crew, embarked on an on-water trip to the Bahamas. He chronicled the trip in a series of videos that we will share with you over the next few weeks.
This video is part 1 of the voyage to Exuma Islands in the Bahamas.
Hi, my name is Tawni Nordstrand. I’m sure you guys get asked this all the time…. My husband and I have become so incredibly inspired by your guys’ videos and have decided to plan our own SeaDoo adventure through the Bahamas. We are planning our trip around the end of April to the start of May (2015) We were wondering if you guys had any advice as far as timing, places to go and how to get started, etc. Any info and/or advice would be so greatly appreciated!! Thanks for so much for inspiring a trip of a lifetime!!
Tawni, we are glad you are feeling the adventurous spirt to live the Sea-Doo life. The Bahamas are one of the most pristine boating areas in the world but can also be treacherous. Cruising the Bahamas takes in-depth planning and both sound physical riding ability and mental strength as you have to first cross some ocean to get there. The biggest piece of advice we can provide is know your own and your machines limits and think safety all the time. When you do cross over, be sure to do so with a flotilla as there are safety in numbers, ideally a large boat to break the seas for a smoother ride and also for added safety.
As for timing that comes down to mother nature but please know that the April/May time frame is usually windy and can make for rough seas. There is no perfect time as mother nature doesn’t look at a calendar but the late Summer is known for the, “summer doldrums” although a tropical system can develop too. There are more than a handful of riders who have done this trip but usually they are from South Florida and can pick and choose their days. In addition to the mentioned tips, another mantra to live by is you can never over prepare for something like this. Build up to it with long rides and see what kinds of surprises you run into to learn what to be prepared for.
Hi!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!! After I read your comment we have been researching ALOT about when and where to go. It is looking like we have our hearts set at the end of June to the start of July this year. Though, we know there will be no “perfect” time to go we will prepare accordingly. We have so many questions! A lot we can research online of course, but there is no one better to ask than someone who has done and inspired the very trip we are planning :o) I hope this doesn’t come off to be too much of an inconvenience! We would be so grateful for any advice and would be greatly appreciated!!
What supplies do you recommend as a must?
What did you guys learn from your trip? Would you have done anything different? What were some of the troubles you had?
Do you know what your fuel consumption was? We will have two wave runners and a boat a bit bigger than the one you guys used.
Any suggestions for customs to Bahamas, then back to Miami?
Any recommendations on GPS units?
Where did you guys stay in Staniel Cay?
Eeeeek!! Again! I know it’s a lot :o/ Thanks again so so much!!
