Onboard: Your fans know you well from your multiple wins and your racing fame including your most recent trip to the winner’s podium at the 2015 AquaX, but what would surprise them to learn about you?

Eric: At a young age I had the opportunity to get involved in the family restaurant business and I jumped on it! Today, I now own “The WaterfrontToo” Grille & Steakhouse, a spin-off of the original “Waterfront” restaurant my family established in Sarasota. It’s a 250-seat seafood and steakhouse in Nokomis. I’m proud of what we have accomplished, especially being recognized for our signature hand-cut steaks and fresh fish as well as for our slow-cooked prime rib which is the best in town! We also cater to water enthusiasts – they can access the restaurant by water and pull up and dock for an evening of dining fun waterside.

Onboard: When not in the heat of racing season, what’s a typical day for you like?

Eric:  My typical day would be to wake-up and either work-out or go riding.  I try to ride three to five days a week to stay in shape for the grueling Aqua Cross season – which is fast approaching!  After prepping for competition on my Sea-Doo – so I can continue to win titles, I then head over to the restaurant. Since it is only open for dinner, it provides me with tremendous schedule flexibility. This allows me to fit my race training schedule around owning and operating my restaurant.

Onboard: Your Sea-Doo is a major component of your life on and off the race circuit. How do you like to spend your “off” days?

Eric:  My perfect “non-racing” day on my Sea-Doo would be going to a place I’ve ridden to my entire life, a place called Bayside. It’s on the northern end of Longboat Key, and it is one of my favorite spots because it makes for easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. On a perfect day, there would be three to five-foot surf – which offers me and my buddies awesome launches all day long! And when not on my Sea-Doo, you can find me enjoying other water sports including wake boarding and surfing.

Sea-Doo personal watercraft have four entirely different types of hulls. Yes, four. And, each one offers a different type of riding experience so that you get the best type of ride for your style.

GTI HULL
Let’s start with the GTI hull. Our GTI hulls are playful, stable and predictable. They provide riders that need a more forgiving watercraft, but still have versatility for glassy and moderate water conditions. The hull rides higher on the water surface so that you get that nimbleness that make watercraft a blast and it planes quickly. With multiple passengers, the extended width has been shown to be the most stable ride. How can you point this hull out?

GTI HullThe GTI hull has a flatter V (16-degree deadrise) and is shorter with a low center of gravity. It is also a three-seater, which means it has tow sport capabilities! This hull makes for ideal rides on all of Sea-Doo’s GTI / recreation models as well as the WAKE 155 for wakeskating & wakeboarding and the GTR 215 for performance rides. A recent win from Eric Lagopolous at AquaX in St. Cloud on his Sea-Doo GTR 215 shows just how versatile this hull truly is.

These hulls are made from a lightweight material, and the stepped style creates a low-pressure zone to reduce drag and create nimble handling.  The S3 hull cuts through the water and leans naturally when cornering; it’s really all about comfort. For riders looking to take an extended journey, this hull reigns supreme as it bridges and cuts chop better.

Sea-Doo S3 Hull You can differentiate the S3 hull by it long, deep V shape (23-degree deadrise) and suspension option. It also comes as a three-seater with towsports capabilities. The S3 is the platform for all of the Sea-Doo GTX / Luxury models (we mentioned comfort, didn’t we?), the WAKE Pro 215, and the RXT models for better offshore performance.

The revolutionary T3 hull was another design success. For performance enthusiasts, this hull is the cream of the crop. It provides aggressive lean-in turning characteristics. And, it penetrates through chop and rough water conditions better than any of its predecessors. T3 stands for Tight-Turning T-hull and uses an advanced dual surface hull design.

A unique combination of soft and hard chines engages the water with a suction-like force when leaning into a corner. These combined features allow the rider to turn tighter and faster. The T3 hull has great stability at idle and low speeds, unmatched acceleration, and a narrow high-speed running surface that helps the RXP-X track though chop better. SPARK HULL

The SPARK hull design objective was based on bringing back the simple fun and heritage of early day Sea-Doo models. The Sea-Doo X4 hull was one of the all-time best selling hull styles and this hull was used as the basis for the SPARK. This V-hull includes a latter center running surface and two sets of hard chines on either side of the keel to provide precise handling while being nimble and playful.

Additional volume was added both to the bow and to the rear gunnels to provide extra buoyancy and stability. Plus the reshaped bow design helps deflect water down providing a dryer ride. ERIC LAGOPOULOS WINS THE JACKSONVILLE ROUND OF AQUAX ON HIS SEA-DOO GTR 215

Eric Lagopoulos continued his 2014 unbeaten streak in the AQUAX 250 class by sweeping all three mottos on his Sea-Doo GTR 215 taking his season total to six consecutive moto wins. Lagopoulos was joined on the podium by fellow GTR 215 mounted racers Sean Hagan taking second and Tim McKercher rounding out the top three.  The Sea-Doo GTR 215 is arguably the watercraft industry’s best keep performance secret as BRP‘s lowest price performance model that is fast with predictable handling yet very forgiving in unpredictable conditions. The GTR 215 model is proving itself as the ultimate mid-range performance watercraft.

The P1 AQUAX racing series continues to grow in popularity as the second round of the US tour took center stage near downtown Jacksonville, Florida in front of an estimated 10,000 race fans over the weekend. After the season opener in the surf of Daytona Beach in April the watercraft racers joined the Evinrude powered Superstock boats for a full throttle weekend of boating competition. The large 1.8 mile track on the St. Johns River provided a good arena for close handlebar-to-handlbar action in a series where the competitors compete on nearly out-of-the-box stock watercraft that places more emphasis on rider ability and stamina than other forms of watercraft racing where modifications play a more significant role.  Sea-Doo racers have extra incentive for top finishes at the AQUAX races with extra prize money available to them through the Sea-Doo Bounty racer contingency program, the program that will reward Lagopoulos an extra $250 from BRP for his win.

Screen Shot 2013-08-13 at 11.13.59 AMThe P1 AquaX series is relatively new to the world of personal watercraft racing but long overdue.  It’s a new style of watercraft competition for sea-riding enthusiasts who want to try watercraft racing but with out having to modify their Sea-Doo watercraft and competing in a relatively safe endurance style event. This weekend marks the third round of the US AquaX series taking place in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Powerboat P1 is the company behind the AquaX series. The company has a rich history in promoting powerboat racing, which includes hosting over 85 world championship events in their 9 years of business. After acquiring the rights to the successful Formula Four-Stroke championships in 2009, they turned their attentions to building a low cost, powerboat racing series powered by Evinrude starting in the UK. By 2010, the series was rebranded to P1 Superstock and they launched the ‘Grand Prix of the Sea’, a festival of watersports touring high profile venues across the country.

And as with SuperStock, P1’s interest in watercraft competition is based on building a sport from the ground up, hence AquaX is unlike any watercraft competition that’s gone before and is specifically geared towards attracting amateur riders to come along and have a go! And who knows, you just might become the next AquaX champion!

AquaX is an exciting coastal challenge that offers a completely new experience for personal watercraft enthusiasts. Unlike other watercraft competition where the majority of racing takes place inland and usually on technical tracks, AquaX events take place on the sea and large bodies of water. And because of the ever-changing coastal conditions, the rider’s skill prevails over horsepower, thus creating a level playing field for all.

The courses are big, but fun to ride, giving the competitors the chance to open up their throttles and enjoy the full performance of their craft in a safe and controlled environment. The courses also provide a real sense of achievement for those who complete the task.

The championship is made up of a series of events where competitors earn points towards overall championship titles. Competitors must take part in practice plus two races over the course of each event. The races take place on the Superstock boat courses, which are approximately 1.8nm long, and 30 – 40 minutes plus 1 lap in duration. No need to worry about getting lost, as the tracks are monitored by a highly trained crew of waterborne marshals ensuring everyone’s safety is paramount.

Screen Shot 2013-08-13 at 11.15.42 AMAquaX split into 3 categories – 200hp – where the Sea-Doo GTI SE 155 and GTX 155 are the preferred models -250hp – where the Sea-Doo GTR 215 and GTX 215 fair well and 300hp that feature the Sea-Doo RXT-X aS 260, Sea-Doo RXT-X, and Sea-Doo RXP-X – to accommodate huge diversity in engine displacements. Two-Stroke craft and naturally aspirated four-stroke craft under 180hp will qualify to compete in the 200hp, whereas the 250hp & 300hp classes will be reserved for the more powerful supercharged four-strokes of today. Craft may be modified, however four-stroke craft must remain stock as from the manufacturer, with the exception of handling modifications. The Sea-Doo X-TEAM has hit a hot streak on racing circuits around North America over the middle weekends of July with James Bushell and Troy Snyder leading the way on the IJSBA US National Racing Tour in the Pro Open class and Pro Stock class respectively.

Both racers won their respective Pro classes at both the Reno, Nevada and Colonial Beach, Virginia rounds of the Hydroturf National Tour aboard their Sea-Doo RXP-X models and both sit in solid positions to claim National Championships with two rounds to go.

Bushell is the defending 2X Pro Open and Pro GP World Champion and is making his first attempt at winning the US National Tour after claiming multiple European and Dubai titles. He is from the UK where his BRP dealership 158Performance supports his efforts with tuning of Les Cooke of the Sea-Doo Centre. Bushell has found his rhythm in the states and nearly lapped the field in his final moto in Virginia with fellow RXP-X mounted Erminio Iantosca joining him on the podium.

Snyder is the wily veteran of the tour at the age of 41 with his RIVA Racing backed Sea-Doo RXP-X has carrying him to solid wins over defending National and World Champion Eric Francis. Snyder rides the same watercraft performance enthusiasts can buy off the showroom floor with the midas touch of well-known tuner Bo Dupriest of Neptune Racing giving his RXP-X the edge.

 

The next two rounds will be extremely competitive as tour visits Georgia before culminating in West Virginia. More top level Sea-Doo X-TEAM competitors are expected to participate int he final two rounds where the racing will be intense.

In the second round of the new P1 AquaX series taking place on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, Sea-Doo X-TEAM riders claimed the top podium positions in both the 300 and 250 classes. Sea-Doo X-TEAM rider Jeremy Schandelmayer rode his Sea-Doo RXP-X to a clean sweep over the weekend claiming the overall win and the 300 class (251-300 horsepower) win on the wide open course in calm conditions. This was Schandelmayer’s first AquaX race but will not be his last as he walked away with over $$1200 in prize money and Sea-Doo Bounty contingency funds. Taking the second spot in the 300 class was Kevin Wassum who just recently starting competing on his Sea-Doo RXP-X, the same watercraft he won by being named the Sea-Doo Ultimate Fan in 2011.

The P1 AquaX series is built for new racers and old in a format that focusses on safety with wide open, endurance courses piggy backing the Evinrude powered P1 Superstock boat races in arguably the most professionally produced races in the UK and US. All watercraft must remain completely stock with only cosmetic changes allowed. The 250 class (200-250 horsepower) win was claimed by industry veteran Tim McKercher on a Sea-Doo GTR 215. This was McKercher’s first organized race in over 17 years as the AquaX format makes competing safe and affordable for the everyday performance enthusiast.

DOCTOR DOO: Don’t Get “Steered” Wrong Sea-Doo Boaters

It has been a frequent question since 1994 when, then Bombardier, introduced their first Sea-Doo a
boat, the Speedster. The twin engined, twin direct drive water jet propelled machine was a new type of fun, and the family could come along too! Along with the new machine came some new mechanical layouts that differ from the standard PWC.

 

Most often PPG hears “Why won’t my boat go straight?” or “it really pulls to the left!” or to the right….

 

Well, it’s usually one or two things, sometimes as many as three elements that need to be addressed.

 

A simple Straight Edge can be used to determine is the steering nozzles are aligned or not aligned.

We’re showing a simple way, using a calibrated straight edge, to assure that the steering nozzles themselves are aligned. The steering nozzles, well, they steer, they are what ultimately what steers the boat by pushing the transom to one side or the other.

1. – This should be the first aspect to be inspected. Using the straight edge it should have contact in four places at the steering nozzles. If not, align by adjusting the connecting rod between the two nozzles, or have a certified Sea-Doo dealer do this for you. Once your nozzles are aligned, ensure your nozzles and steering wheel are straight. If they are not there are two adjustment points for the actual steering cable; one at the steering nozzle end and one at the steering wheel end. Before adjusting these points be sure to consult a official BRP/Sea-Doo Shop Manual or better yet, have a BRP certified technician do the adjustment.

 

2. – Propulsion system inspection, It is very difficult for most operators to *never* have a small stone, shell, or even a piece of floating hardwood (stick or twig) to not get processed through the rapidly spinning impellers due to the strong suction of the pumps intakes themselves (refer to our last Dr. Doo article).

A slight ding in an impeller can be the reason for the boat to start pulling one way or the other, even though they are at the same RPM’s and the throttles are perfectly synchronized.

3. – Synchronizing Throttles: synchronizing of RPM via the throttles, if you have twin throttles, is key.

Some shops say this can be done accurately without being in the water with said unit….it can’t. The reason is that the two individual pumps have to have INDENTICAL pump loads for this to work. Now when the impellers and impeller wear-rings are in new condition it is much more feasible for all things to be equal within the pump assemblies.

Once the alignment is complete, considering that the jet pumps and the impellers are in good matching shape, it is time to synchronize the throttles. This is best left to a certified Sea-Doo technician also. Patience and training make the whole process much easier, and it doesn’t cost a lot for it to be done correctly.

So when the local BRP dealer is telling you these things have to be *right*, for it to steer correctly, and keep the throttles aligned, they are telling it to you…straight.

Hopefully this has helped shed some light on what can be an aggravating issue.

The new Sea-Doo RXP-X 260 features a new hull, The T3 hull. It is another revolutionary innovation from BRP, a literal, T-shape hull  With a narrow lower running surface that tracks through chop like nothing before it.  It is difficult to explain how well this new Sea-Doo watercraft handles chop.
