Sea-Doo X-TEAM AquaX DaytonaAshley Sponaugle is a Sea-Doo watercraft enthusiast. Ashely is the proud owner of a Sea-Doo RXP-X. She owns a RXP-X because she is a go fast type of girl. When the opportunity to compete in an actual watercraft race against other first timers, her competitive juices rose to the top. The other element that attracted her to the P1 AquaX series in Florida was that all competitors must ride stock model PWC in three different classes, determined by stock horsepower ratings. No modifications were allowed, meaning no money spent on modifying the units putting everyone on equal footing.

Former Pro watercraft racer Lisa Barsby began the P1 AquaX racers in her home land, the United Kingdom to bring in a new group of people into the PWC racing family. Racing stock units opens the door to many riders who simply aren’t interested in spending money to modify their watercraft that they enjoy riding casually every weekend. The format mixes closed course racing with endurance in a simplistic track layout that is easy to follow and provides wide open areas to navigate while minimizing tight cornering sections. This format is what drew Sponaugle, Ultimate Sea-Doo Fan contest winner Kevin Wassum and many other first timers to compete in the first of what BRP hopes is many P1 Aqua X events in the United States.

ERic Lagopoulos Wins Daytona AquaX

Overall winner Eric Lagopoulos

The first P1 Aqua X event was conducted in Daytona Beach, Florida in challenging surf and saw the majority of the participants competing for the first time…ever. It was a veteran racer, Eric Lagopoulos who took the overall win on a Sea-Doo RXP-X but for the dozen first timers it was a victory in simply being a part of it. Most noted that the racing bug has now bit them and they look forward to riding their Sea-Doo in future competitions. Watercraft racing has existed since the early 1980s but it hasn’t been since the recent growth of the HydroDrag drag racing series and now the P1 AquaX series that new faces have experienced what Sea-Doo watercraft can provide those with the competitive spirit.

GPcourseThis week officially marks the start of the 2013 Closed course racing season for North America with the first round of the Pro Hydro-X Tour, Presented by Sea-Doo begins this weekend in Gulfport, Florida.

The Sea-Doo X-TEAM is back in action after a dominating end of the 2012 season at the IJSBA World Finals and 2013 looks to pick up in the same fashion with the high-performance Sea-Doo RXP-X with T3 hull and ErgoLock system coming into its sophomore year.

It has been a long winter and racers are eager to get the season started this weekend . This weekend the Pro Hydro-X Tour kicks off 2013 racing in Gulfport, Florida. April 6-7 the City of Gulfport and the Gulfport area Chamber of Commerce will open their city up for the first time to personal watercraft racing, welcoming racers from all over the US. Sea-Doo mounted racers will be able to compete for additional funds through the Sea-Doo Big Bucks Bounty racer contingency program where top finishing racers can gain up to $800 per class in additional prize money. The Sea-Doo Bounty is the only program of its kind in the watercraft industry as BRP is the leading supporter of PWC racing.

Gulfport Aquamania is the first race of a the five round Region 7 (South Eastern US) Series ending in beautiful Islamorada, Florida in September. The courses will emulate National Tour and World finals courses providing world class action on the water. Racers and spectators will be able to buy sponsors’ gear and apparel on site and get a look at some of RIVA Racings newest “go fast” parts for sea-doo watercraft at the Kaotik Products registration area. So come on out this weekend, April 6-7 and enjoy a great Florida beach and some of the best and most competitive racing in the country. See you in Gulfport!

X-TEAM TUESDAY – BEACH AND BOARDS FEST – QUIK TOW-AT SURFING

Personal watercraft and surfing have become connected in a manner unthought of not so long ago. Surfing is a soulful sport, arguably pegging the “cool” factor, with guys and girls using the power of mother nature to provide them with walking on water ride. It was in the very late ’80s when some stand-up personal watercraft riders were hanging out with some big gun surfers in Hawaii when they tried a little experiment. Surfing has been a sport in the Pacific islands for hundreds of years and has rapidly progressed as has the innovation of the equipment, mainly the use of foam and fiberglass. Surfers were pushing the limits of whats possible but physical limitations still held them back from some of the best breaks in the world.

The paddle to the good breaks were near impossible and getting in the right spot, and out of the wrong spot, was overcome by the next progression in surfing technology, the personal watercraft. In Hawaii surfers were being pulled into waves that they would normally not be able to reach of paddle fast enough to catch and the sport of Tow-in Surfing was born. In fact it has come so far, professional big wave rider, Garrett McNamarra only two months ago rode the first 100-foot wave after being pulled in by a Sea-Doo RXT-X in Portugal. These guys trust their lives with the reliability of Sea-Doo watercraft, as with out them, surfing these watery skyscrapers would be next to impossible.

The United States East Coast Surf scene is different. The Atlantic Ocean usually provides smaller swells to those in Florida waters to New York. On the Atlantic side, the challenge was how to catch much smaller waves, waves that don’t always break consistently in the same spot forcing surfers to paddle back and forth to catch the good sets. Sea-Doo watercraft have been utilized to grow the sport of Tow-At surfing where Sea-Doo WAKE models are used to tow surfers to the breaks where they can ride the wave faster than normal and pull off big arial tricks they could never do by simply paddling.

This past weekend in Cocoa Beach, Florida the Beach and Boards fest sponsored by Quicksilver took place and some of the best East coast surfers took to the air in the QUIK Tow-At. Competitors were treated to a perfect day with head high waves in temperatures in the upper 70-degree range. Tow-At surfing has grown in popularity with famous Florida breed surfing brothers including the Slater brothers, Lopez brothers, and the Hobgoods. Sea-Doo watercraft has been an integral part of that sports growth and will continue to help these wave riders push their sport to new heights.
